4/17/15 FUN FACT FRIDAY – THE HISTORY OF THE CHAINSAW

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThis is what the first chainsaw looked like. Can you guess what it was used for ? ? ? ?

In 1830, German orthopedist, Bernhard Heine used it to cut bone. It had links of a chain carrying small cutting teeth with the edges set at an angle; the chain was moved around a guiding blade by turning the handle of a sprocket wheel.
California inventor named Muir was the first person to put a chain on a blade to use for logging purposes, technically inventing the first logging chainsaw. However, Muir’s invention weighed hundreds of pounds and required a crane. This invention was neither a commercial or practical success.
The first portable chainsaw was invented in 1925 by Andreas Stihl, while working for what became the German company Festo in 1933. The company now operates as Festool producing portable power tools.
