4/10/15 FUN FACT FRIDAY – How to Install Glass in Cabinet Doors

Glass inserts can be installed in your existing cabinet doors, enhancing or changing the look of your kitchen. This will save you a considerable amount of money that you will not need to spend on new cabinet doors. All that is required is making sure you have the proper equipment to use and then selecting the type of glass inserts that you want to place in your cabinet doors.

  1. Measure to find glass that will fit your cabinet doors using a tape measure. The cabinet door should have at least an inch or more border around the glass insert.
  2. Take the cabinet door off of the cabinet by using a screwdriver to remove the screws in the cabinet door hinges.
  3. Mark on the cabinet door where the frame is going to be located. Measure the width of the frame using a tape measure and make a mark with a pencil. Use a straight edge to leave straight lines to outline the frame on the cabinet door.
  4. Drill small holes in each corner of your frame using a power drill. The holes are used to insert the blade for the jig saw.
  5. Cut out the hole for the glass insert by following the outline with the jig saw.
  6. Place decorative trim pieces on the front side of the frame around the hole. Leave a half-inch edge on the inside of the frame. This will be used to secure the piece of glass to the cabinet door.
  7. Secure the decorative trim pieces to the door using a nail gun.
  8. Turn the cabinet door over and insert the piece of glass so that it sits on the edges of the decorative trim.
  9. Cut small wood strips, called quarter rounds, to place along the edge of the piece of glass. Secure the wood strips to the cabinet door using the nail gun or a hammer.
  10. Reattach the cabinet door to the cabinet to complete the project. Use a screwdriver to tighten the screws for the cabinet door hinges.
